Reflection of the Week
Systems thinking is especially prone to evoking defensiveness due to its central message, that our actions create our reality.
— Senge, Peter M.
Excerpt of the Week

In a classic 1994 article published in the Harvard Business Review, Chris Argyris criticized “good communication that blocks learning,” arguing that formal communication mechanisms like focus groups and organizational surveys actually give employees mechanisms to let management know what they think, without them taking any responsibility for the problems and for their commitment to solving them.

These mechanisms fail because “they do not lead people to reflect on their own work and behavior. They do not encourage personal responsibility. And they do not bring to the surface the kind of deep and potentially threatening or embarrassing information that encourages learning and produces real change.”
